Sports injuries can happen to anyone at any time. They can occur on the job, at home and while performing your normal daily tasks. The key to stopping the pain and healing the injury is to recognize that you are injured and make an appointment with our chiropractor in Brentwood.
How do I know I have a sports injury?
Sports injuries fall into two categories, including chronic and acute. Acute injuries happen suddenly. Symptoms include immediate pain, bruising, loss of range of motion and pain while moving the afflicted body part. Chronic injuries occur over time. Symptoms of a chronic injury include increasing pain over a period of weeks or months, pain while using the afflicted body part, inflammation and weakness.
Can I treat my sports injury with RICE?
Rice, which stands for Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation, is great for the first 24 to 48 hours. It helps reduce pain, inflammation and swelling. However, it your pain persists for longer than 48 hours or you notice a loss of range of motion and strength, you should seek out chiropractic care from our Portage chiropractor.
What types of sports injuries does your chiropractor treat?
Our chiropractor treats strains, sprains, tendonitis, stress fractures, tennis elbow, runner’s knee, shin splits, plantar fasciitis and back and neck pain as well as shoulder injuries.
What treatments for sports injuries do you offer?
We offer chiropractic adjustments, massage therapy and lifestyle and nutrition counseling. Chiropractic adjustments help ensure that your back and extremity joints are properly aligned. When your joints are properly aligned, they are less prone to incorrect movements, which can injury muscles and tendons. Massage therapy relaxes sore and injured muscles, improves circulation and promotes healing. Nutrition is incredibly important when you are recovery from a sports injury. When your body has the correct fuel, it is better able to heal itself.
How long will it take to heal my sports injury?
Healing times vary depending on the injury and the severity of the injury. In general, the sooner you start receiving chiropractic care, the sooner your injury will heal. Our chiropractor will be able to give you a general prognosis after performing the initial evaluation and physical examination.
Is there anything I can do to prevent sports injuries in the future?
A lot of sports injuries occur due to improper warm ups, failure to stretch and undertaking tasks and exercise regimens that are more strenuous than usual. Before stretching, it is important to warm-up your muscles by walking for five or 10 minutes. Trying to stretch cold muscles can lead to injuries. If you plan to start an exercise routing or increase your current routine, you should build-up slowly. Rapidly increasing your activity levels can lead to stress fractures, muscle pulls and tendon strains. If you pull a muscle or injury yourself, you should stop the activity and apply ice. If the pain persists, schedule an appointment with our Portage chiropractor.
